NEW ENGG COLLEGE

Pune: A new Government College of Engineering (GCoE) will be set up at the Avasari Khurd village of Ambegaon taluka in 2009-10

Speaking to TOI on Thursday, state director for technical education (DTE) S.K. Mahajan said, “The government has acquired 17 acres of land at Avasari Khurd and has finalised all the details, including making a budgetary provision for the new GCoE. We have also forwarded a letter of intent (LoI) to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)”.
“We have plans to start with an initial construction work covering 30,000 sq ft area for the proposed college to go operational from 2009-10,” Mahajan added.

To begin with, the government plans to offer degree courses in the automobile engineering, electronics and telecommunication (E&TC), information technology (IT) and computer engineering branches. Each branch will have an annual student intake of 60, which works out to a total intake of 240 seats.

The existing College of Engineering Pune (CoEP), which was once controlled by the government, attained autonomy in 2004 and all admissions to this institution are now open to students from across the state and outside.
As such, students from Pune district barely had much option in terms of accessing seats at government-run colleges of engineering.

The district has no GCoE of its own and this spurred government thinking behind having a new GCoE for the UoP area.
On Wednesday, the state cabinet gave its formal nod to the project and set the process for creation of new teaching and non-teaching posts, on the roll. Similarly, the project expenditure too was cleared.
