Mumbai: Junior colleges that bought time to put
out their second merit lists, following the controversy
surrounding the 70:30 district quota for admissions, finally
came out with lists on Monday. In fact, Ruparel College,
Matunga, which had withheld its lists on Saturday, was so
careful that it put out different cut-offs for students
within its district and those from elsewbere.
According to the quota system, 70% of seats must be reserved
for those within a college’s district. Mumbai is divided
into the South Mumbai, Suburb 1 and Suburb 2 districts.
Students flocked to Ruparel and Ruia, also in Matunga, on
Monday morning to see that cut-offs had dropped marginally
from the first lists, the same pattern as seen in other
colleges on Saturday. For arts at Ruia, the second cut-off
dropped by less than 2 percentile, from 87.37 to 85.15.
The cutoffs for science dropped by less than 1 percentile,
from 95.24 to 94.43.
Some students, like Aditi Patil, who scored 92.67%, had
come mentally prepared. She was not too upset to see her
name not on the second merit list for science. “I
knew I wouldn’t make it because the cut-offs are just
too high for BSc. With this whole quota and percentile thing
I was expecting the worst anyway,’’ she said
with a smile, adding that she was preparing for the IIT
entrance exam and has a seat at Khalsa College.
Nishad Golambare, a resident of Dadar, was relieved to make
it. “I came on Saturday and waited for more than four
hours, but had to return emptyhanded. All this is just adding
to the anxiety of students,’’ said Golambare,
who secured a science seat at Ruia.
At Ruparel, the arts cut-offs fell by a huge margin. They
fell from 80 to 69.14 percentile for the local district
and 76.19 for outsiders. But in science, the cut-off fell
by less than a percentile, from 96.55 to 95.67, for locals.
It fell to 96.35 for outsiders. The drop was small for commerce
as well, where it fell from 90.75 to 88.6 percentile for
the local district and 90.2 for others.
Sphoorti Pandit, a student of Dhirubhai Ambani International
School, finally breathed a sigh of relief after seeing her
name on the second merit list for BSc at Ruparel. Pandit,
who scored 93.57% in her Std X exams, didn’t apply
anywhere else. “I was beginning to get worried after
the lists didn’t come out on Saturday and with all
this hype about percentiles and quotas,’’ she
said.
A vice-principal said that the second lists had been delayed
to ensure that the law was being followed and the students’
futures were not being compromised. When asked why the college
had implemented the regionwise quota when other south Mumbai
colleges had not, one principal said his college fell in
a zone that was near the border of two districts.
